After falling to Spire Institute last week, the Garfield Heights Bulldogs responded in a major way with two statement victories. Sophomore guard Demetrius ‘Meechie’ Johnson Jr. continues to show what is making him one of the most prolific scorers in the state, going for two consecutive 40-point games.
Garfield Heights gained its most recent victory over New Academy on Tuesday night. The game started slow for the Bulldogs as head coach Sonny Johnson pulled his starters early in the period. However, that wouldn't last long as Garfield Heights quickly turned things around. Meechie Johnson re-entered the game and immediately hit a deep three-pointer to record his first basket of the night. Johnson was just getting started as he finished 19 points in the first quarter.
New Day Academy put up a fight, as junior Jaylen Cottrell scored 27 of his 35 points in the first half in route to outscoring the Bulldogs 24-21 in the second quarter. The two sides ended the half with Garfield Heights owning a 55-41 lead.
At the start the second half, Johnson picked-up where he left off as he attacked the basket and made back-to-back three-pointers. Johnson finished the contest with 41 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists while connecting on five 3-pointers. Garfield Heights would pull out the victory 102-71 as Sonny Johnson Jr. also pitched in with 8 points, 10 assists and 5 rebounds.
This was the second consecutive game that Meechie Johnson eclipsed the 40-point mark after posting 40 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists against John Adams High School in a 75-72 win on Saturday.
In last Thursday’s showdown with Spire, LaMelo Ball and his talented teammates got the best of the young Bulldogs by a score of 93-60. Meechie went for 20 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists in his debut.
If the last two games are any indication of what’s in store for this season, Meechie and his Bulldogs team will be a sight to see in Northeast Ohio.
