Mac McClung concluded his senior season at Gate City High School as the most decorated athlete in Virginia basketball history.
McClung shattered Allen Iverson’s single-season scoring record with 1,153 points and also became the VHSL’s all-time leading scorer with 2,801 career points. Along the way, McClung grabbed the attention of the nation with his high-flying dunks and viral athleticism.

In the end though, the ultimate goal was to deliver his hometown its first ever boys basketball title.
It was a goal that eluded McClung in 2017 when Gate City fell in overtime in the state quarterfinals.
However in 2018, McClung would not be denied, as the future Georgetown Hoya overpowered the competition and completed the dream by defeating R.E. Lee by a score of 80-65 in the state title game.
Fittingly, McClung broke one final record in his last game by scoring a VHSL championship record of 47 points. The record was previously held by Philadelphia 76ers shooting guard J.J. Reddick with 43 points.
