Queens, NY – The final game of the Apparel Challenge featured the host school Christ the King Royals and the visiting Chaminade Flyers. Christ the King dominated from start to finish as they won by a score of 74-52 over the visiting Flyers.
The Royals won their seventh straight game to improve to a record of 8-2 on the season. Chaminade came into this game playing well as they came off a dominant win against St Mary’s on January 3rd but drop to 8-3 on the year.
It was apparent from the opening tip that Chaminade was no match for the Christ the King Royals. Chaminade scored the first basket of the game but after that Christ the King went on a 16-0 run and they never looked back. As they have in every game this season, Christ the King set the tone defensively as freshman center Moussa Cisse had three emphatic blocks in the first half; leading to easy baskets for the guards of Christ the King. Christ the King went into the dressing room with a comfortable 42-25 halftime advantage.
Christ the King was led in scoring by sophomore guard Quaran McPherson who scored 12 points in the opening half. Those points would not have been possible without the defense of Cisse.
Christ the King once again did a great job turning defense into offense and there is no telling how much better they can be as the season progresses.
“All the time we have to practice,”’ Cisse said. “We work hard to be better, every time people taught me that, if you work hard you are going to be better, so that’s how I do it, I practice and I work hard to be better.”
The offense is still not where it needs to be in the mind of Coach Arbitello but he does see improvement.
“There is progress, it looked a little bit better,’’ Arbitello said on his team’s progress despite winning by blowouts. “I think they are growing and think they will handle it well like the good team they are.’’
Christ the King will next host St. Francis on Tuesday night.
